Living Books

The object is to have student bring picture books alive by narrating a series of pictures from the book.

Students must select an appropriate picture book to be approved by the teacher.  Students must storyboard their plans before beginning. Storyboards may be on large poster paper, butcher paper, or 4x6 cards, or on the storyboard handout.  Complete all cards before starting work on the computer.

Beginning students may use the existing images from Cook-A-Doodle-Do and Stella Luna.  Intermediate and advanced students should select other books.  They must scan the images as well.  Beginning students may work in groups of two or three if they wish.  Intermediate and advanced students should work in groups of two or independantly.

The teacher will presents a lesson on the Ken Burns effect in iMovie.  All students will use a set of similar images from a different book.  Included in the lesson is how to use iMovie and what all of the buttons mean.  Students will create a movie of 3 or 4 still images with narration.

After this the teacher will supervise students as they work on their projects.  Students will not be allowed to begin work on the computer until the storyboard is complete.

What If Georgia O'Keefe Was A Photographer

Examine paintings by Georgia O’Keefe.  Describe the texture, lighting, themes, subjects, colors, and style.  Include images of her paintings next to the descriptions to help other understand the kind of paintings she made.

Plan digital photographs which will be the kind of photograph Georgia O’Keefe would have taken.  Take the photos with a digital camera.  Import the photos into a digital editing program (iPhoto).  Edit the images if necessary to make them look like photographs which Georgia would have taken.

Create a multimedia presentation which shows Georgia O’Keefe paintings and your photographs.  Explain how they are examples of photographs she would have taken.  Begin by making a story board using large poster paper, butcher paper, or 4x6 cards.  Complete all cards before starting work on the computer.

Present this to the class.
