Ancient Civilizations

Unit 1

Chapter 1 |  First Civilizations
Scientists who study the past have learned that the earliest humans hunted animals and gathered plants for food.  When farming developed, people settled in villages and towns. This covers the period of history from early humans through Mesopotamian empires.

Chapter 2 |  Ancient Egypt and Kush
The fertile land along the great Nile River supported the Egyptian civilization.

Chapter 3 |  Ancient Israelites
The twelve tribes of Israel in the land of Canaan were descendants of Abraham.  The Israelites believed in one God who gave commandments telling people how to live good lives.

Unit 2

Chapter 4 |  Early India
The earliest Indian cuvilization developoed on the Indus River.  Later, the Aryans arrived in northern India.  A social system that determined homw people lived evolved.  Click here for a link to the India Project.

Chapter 5  |  Early China
Chinese civilization was shaped by geography such as mountains and large rivers.  Long-lasting dynasties gained power through strong armies.

Chapter 6  |  Ancient Americans
The first people in the Americas arrived thousands of years ago.  Farming led to the growth of civilizations in what is now Mexico, Central America, and Peru.

Unit 3

Chapter 7 |  The Ancient Greeks
Greece's mountains, climate, and surrounding seas played a large role in its history.  The earliest civilization in Greece were Minoans and the Myceaneanes.

Chapter 8  |  Greek Civilization
The Greeks made great strides in the arts. Greek poetry, art, and drama are still part of our world today.
